Inaugural Providence Student Film Festival Rolls the Red Carpet for Local Youth, Showcasing the Next Generation of Filmmakers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The future of cinema is shining brightly in Rhode Island. On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA) successfully hosted the first-ever Providence Student Film Festival, transforming its auditorium into a vibrant hub of youth creativity and storytelling.

Providence Police at Young Woods Mural Unveiling

PROVIDENCE, RI  – In a powerful and heartfelt celebration, students, families, educators and community leaders gathered Wednesday at the Sgt. Colonel Young Jr. & Charlotte Woods Elementary School at the B. Jae Clanton Complex to unveil a mural honoring the three local heroes the school was named after. 

For more than five years, Young Woods Elementary School students who participate in the RESPECT Student Equity Leadership Program have researched, fundraised and helped design the visual tribute that reflects the values of service, justice and unity embodied by Sgt. Cornel Young Jr., Charlotte Woods, and B. Jae Clanton. The Young Woods Elementary School Student Council also assisted to bring the project to fruition.

2025 Teacher of the Year Maria Torres, Leviton Dual Language School

Providence, R.I. (March 31, 2026) – The Providence Public School District (PPSD) is selecting a Teacher of the Year and is asking students, staff, families, and community members to submit nominations for teachers who exemplify the best of the profession.

The nominee should possess the following characteristics:

  • Be knowledgeable in their content area.
  • Be a master at instructional delivery.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to inspire students from all backgrounds with multiple learning abilities.
  • Be respected by their students, parents, peers and colleagues.
  • Be active in the community.
  • Be articulate in state and national educational issues.
  • Be a model representative of their PPSD teaching colleagues.
  • Have at least five years of teaching experience.

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mount Pleasant High School Principal Wobberson Torchon can now add published author to his resume after publishing not one, not two, but three poetry collections.

Where The Tides Spoke For The First Time, Echoes of My Heart and Surges of My Heart (Under Your Pillow) each offer a deeply personal look into Principal Torchon’s life, relationships and philosophy on human connection.
